The School of Performing Arts (SoPA) organized an enriching session for all years students workshop conducted by Dr. Chaerin Kim, Faculty at the University of Massachusetts Boston, an internationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and soloist, as well as a Grammy Award voting member.
Overview
Dr. Kim delivered an insightful and engaging session on a topic that resonates deeply with every performing artist and performance anxiety. Drawing from her extensive experience as an international performer and educator, she shared practical and effective strategies on how to prepare mentally and emotionally before a performance or music competition.
Although her background is rooted in Western classical music, Dr. Kim skillfully connected her learnings to the Western contemporary music industry, making the content highly relatable for students pursuing diverse musical paths. She discussed the nature of performance anxiety, its triggers, and practical confidence-building techniques that artists can apply on stage. Dr. Kim also emphasized the importance of goal-setting and continuous skill enhancement for aspiring musicians, while offering valuable insights into career development in both performance and music education. The session concluded with her sharing unique perspectives from her experience as a Grammy Award voting member, enriching the students’ understanding of the global music industry.
The workshop was highly interactive, with students participating enthusiastically in discussions and reflective exercises. The session succeeded in motivating aspiring musicians to embrace challenges, build confidence, and pursue excellence in their craft.
