Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics was established in 2007 in the faculty of Science by launching a two-year PG programme M.Sc. in Statistics. Later on in the year 2015, the three-year undergraduate programme B.Sc. Applied Statistics and Analytics (ASA) was launched. Based on the need assessment, M.Sc. in Applied Statistics and Analytics programme was started in the year 2018 to provide academic pathway progression to B.Sc. ASA graduates of the School. In the year 2020, B.Sc. in Data Science program was launched to cater to the demands of the Industry for workforce equipped with the skill sets pertaining to the Data Science. A four year B.Sc.(Hons) Artificial Intelligence program has been a recent addition to the bouquet of programs offered by the Department. As of the AY 2022-23, the Department offers the following programs:

The Department has been accorded the administrative approval from the University to start Ph.D. in Statistics programme from the AY 2023-24.

The Department is currently a NMIMS Deemed to be University funded centre for teaching, research and statistical consultancy in the city of Mumbai. It serves to provide the necessary leadership and advice in decision making process involving statistical methodology to varied stakeholders in the city. Clients have come from the government departments, private sector and nongovernmental organizations in and around Mumbai. The Department currently has an establishment comprising of a Professor, three Associate Professors, and five Assistant Professors. The Department also has visiting faculty on roll to run various programmes that are being offered. Starting with the AY 2022-23 the Department of Statistics has been moved to the new Nilkamal School Mathematics and Applied Statistics (NSOMASA) under the restructuring exercise of the NMIMS University. In March 2023, in recognition of the donation, from M/s Nilkamal Limited, the SOMASA has been named after Nilkamal, as "Nilkamal School of Mathematics, Applied Statistics and Analytics” (NSOMASA).
