Social Enterprise Cell

NMIMS University has a strong commitment to influence the quality of management in non-profit organizations. The University believes that social responsibility is a key contributor to progress and that the principles and techniques of management are applicable to both the corporate sector and voluntary service organizations. With the establishment of its Rotary Club of Bombay West Chair in Management of Non-Profit Organizations in 1991, NMIMS became one of the earliest institutions in this country to develop training in the area of voluntary sector. The University has conducted short-term training programmes in the areas of Micro Finance, Micro Insurance, Marketing Rural Products, which were supported, by SIDBI and NABARD in the recent past. The school has also been offering 12 week programme in Enterprise Training for Women since 1992.

With the collaboration of the Rotary Club of Bombay West, NMIMS has conducted short-term courses and Certificate Programmes in VSO Management. Since 2004 the institute has upgraded the Certificate Programme in Management of Voluntary Organisations to a Diploma Programme in Management of Voluntary Organisations. In 2004, the institute organized VOICE 2004 (Voluntary Organizations International Conference on Empowerment). In 2006 the institute collaborated with United Ventures, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Skoll Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Oxford University, to organize an International Conference on Social Entrepreneurship.

Over the years it has been observed that the environment in the social sector has changed to a large extent. While community needs are growing in size and diversity, organizations are facing a financial crunch. Traditional forms of funding are becoming smaller and sporadic and more nonprofits are competing for government and philanthropic funds, with fund providers and donors demanding more accountability.

Societies are looking for innovative and efficient ways to provide socially important goods in health, education, social services, environment and community development. With the emergence and growth of cross-sector partnerships, there is a growing realization that there is a way to combine the very best of the not-for-profit, philanthropic world with the very best of the for-profit, enterprising world. This hybrid is the wave of the future for both profit and nonprofit organizations. In the face of this new reality, an increasing number of forward-looking nonprofits/ NGOs are beginning to appreciate the increased revenue, focus and effectiveness that can come from adopting 'for profit' business approaches. Increasingly, they are reinventing themselves as social entrepreneurs, combining the passion of a social mission with an image of business-like discipline, innovation, and determination.

NMIMS is committed to nurturing the social entrepreneurs of tomorrow and strengthening the social entrepreneurs of today. In this context, NMIMS has designed a uniquely architectured One-Year Diploma Program in Social Entrepreneurship and a Three-Year, Part Time MBA Program in Social Entrepreneurship.

In order to institutionalize its social commitment further, SVKM's NMIMS University has established the Social Enterprise Cell with the following objectives:
  1. To organize orientation and advanced courses for students of management in the area of management of social enterprises, micro finance, and social sector development.
  2. To design workshops, lectures, seminars, conferences, training programmes, management development programmes and symposia for providing knowledge and developing skills of executives from the cross-sectors to address issues of sustainable development, micro enterprise development and management, marketing of rural products, management of NGOs, micro insurance and micro finance.
  3. To document and publish success stories of social entrepreneurs who have impacted social changes using managerial skills; to conduct field-based qualitative and quantitative research in the field of social sector development, management of NGOs, corporate social responsibility, micro enterprise development and micro finance and other related areas.
  4. To support and inspire student interest in applying business skills toward positive social impact through organizations in the non-profit, public and private sectors.
  5. To undertake any such other activity as may be deemed necessary to promote understanding and better professional practice in the area of management of social enterprises, micro finance and other related areas of social sector development.
